Breaking is a blessing of the most sacred kind, in that as we break open, our hearts expand. The more we break, the more light eventually fills in the darkness. It might be hard to believe in the moment, but we actually start to become MORE spacious.
“There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
— Leonard Cohen
It may take time — a lot of time, in fact — to appreciate and understand; we may feel that breaking causes us to literally fall to pieces and that those pieces can’t be put back together. And that’s true in some ways; they can’t go back into the same places because in our brokenness, light seeps in to fill in those cracks whether we are aware of it or not. It takes time for us to pick up the pieces and begin to rearrange them. New space is made, and the pathways we create are paved with gold.
This is what it means to find peace; to know acceptance even in the midst of chaos. This is what it means to find joy; bursts of wonder and thrill despite what’s happening around or inside you. This is what it means to know gratitude; that even in brokenness, the heart can swell and you can know love, be love, give love, & feel love, connecting you not only to that source of light within yourself, but also to others.
