A couple of weeks ago, we had an unusually orange moon. I can’t recall the astronomical reason for the strange color, but it was pretty cool to see. As I was taking the dog out late at night, it occurred to me that this is one of those events that happens every 12 years or something, so I thought it’d be cool to try to photograph the moon for memory’s sake. I wasn’t sure how my images would come out, since I didn’t take time to get my tripod out or anything, and you typically need a tripod for a decent, detailed image of the moon.

I used my Canon 5D and my 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. I took five shots, completely handheld, and one came out!

My settings were: 200mm, f/2.8 at 1/20 sec, ISO 3200! Pretty good if I say so myself! Of course, the 70-200 f/2.8L has image stabilization built in, but to be zoomed in to 200mm and capture a clear image handheld at 1/20 sec. is fairly amazing!

Next time I think I will have to pull the tripod out, but this was still fun!
